USS MICHIGAN circa 1918
Description -
USS Michigan (BB-27), a South Carolina-class battleship, was the first battleship in the world to be commissioned with superimposed, or superfire type turrets. Assigned to Battleship Force 2 on April 6, 1917, she escorted convoys, trained recruits, and engaged in fleet maneuvers and battle practice during World War I. The battleship suffered two notable accidents. In September 1916 a twelve-inch gun of her second turret burst while being fired. On January 15, 1918, while steaming in formation with the fleet off Cape Hatteras, Michigan's foremast, of lattice construction, buckled and was carried away over the port side as the ship lurched violently in the trough of a heavy sea. Six men were killed and 13 injured, five seriously, in this accident. Michigan proceeded to Norfolk where the next day she transferred her casualties to Solace. On January 22 , she entered the Philadelphia Navy Yard for repairs. Early in April, she resumed operations off the East Coast and trained gunners in Chesapeake Bay until World War I ended.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I know your image description is accurate?
We strive to make our photo descriptions as accurate as possible. Descriptions are taken directly from the U.S. Library of Congress, National Archives, or other sources as noted. In many cases, these institutions hold the original negatives and state the ascribed notes directly from the original photographer. Therefore, we use these institutions as our standard of authority on description accuracy. We are not responsible for errors and we will not participate in disputes. Should you have a dispute, please contact the sighted source directly.
This listing provides buyers with the opportunity to review the image and agree with the item description before finalizing a purchase. As such, no refunds will be issued on the basis of an allegedly inaccurate description. We encourage you to feel comfortable with the stated description before ordering.
When can I expect my package?
Items are delivered via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days) with no longer than one (1) day handling time. Your item should not be considered untimely unless it has not been received after one full week from your payment date (within the United States). Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well.
Standard international delivery times vary depending on location. While First Class International usually delivers within 7-14 business days, it offers no guarantee on delivery times and may take up to a month (usually due to customs issues). Please take this into consideration if you are outside the United States and are placing a time-sensitive order. Tracking is not available on standard international shipments. Expedited international shipping is available and includes tracking service. International expedited shipping delivers in approximately 7 business days.
Is your transit packaging secure?
Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for posters and maps, rolled in a crush-resistant tube. We've successfully shipped thousands of prints in this manner, which demonstrates a reliability in our packaging methods. Items will arrive in good order when handled
properly
by postal carriers.
Please note that we pay extra charges to have parcels delivered as PACKAGES, not regular mail. This means your carrier should deliver your package to your doorstep (not bend or cram it into your mailbox). Should you find your package damaged due to this type of handling, please contact your local post office.
How long do I have to pay?
Payment is expected within (7) seven days.
If payment is not received by the eighth day after purchase, we will i
nitiate
an unpaid item case. We pay fees on all items sold through eBay and this process is the only way to reverse fees incured by unpaid transactions. Should a payment issue arise, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're happy to work with you!
What is your return policy
?
We will happily
exchange
any defective or problematic merchandise. However, cash refunds are not allowed, as your bid is a commitment to buy according to eBay policy. The nature of our merchandise also compells us to protect against being treated as a lending library. Therefore, please be confident of desire for our items before placing your order. We ask that you contact us with any potential issue before leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can be easily resolved.
